About During my first semester at the Peabody Conservatory, while working on my master’s degree in composition, I participated in the annual 24 Hour Concert. At 8:00 p.m. on a Friday night, participating composers draw the names of performers out of a hat and have twelve hours to compose a new work for that ensemble. At 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the completed scores are handed to the performers, who then have twelve hours to rehearse. The concert takes place that evening at 8:00 p.m.—exactly twenty-four hours after the process began.

I was thrilled to draw an ensemble of soprano, cello, and piano, and I stayed up through the night writing Under the Harvest Moon, setting a poem by one of my very favorite poets, Carl Sandburg. The immediacy of the process encouraged an instinctive, direct musical language—one that mirrors the poem’s quiet intimacy and nocturnal stillness.

Text "Under the Harvest Moon" by Carl Sandburg

Under the harvest moon,
When the soft silver
Drips shimmering
Over the garden nights,
Death, the gray mocker,
Comes and whispers to you
As a beautiful friend
Who remembers.

Under the summer roses
When the flagrant crimson
Lurks in the dusk
Of the wild red leaves,
Love, with little hands,
Comes and touches you
With a thousand memories,
And asks you
Beautiful, unanswerable questions.
