"Love, with little hands, comes and touches you,
with a thousand memories..."
- Carl Sandburg
| About |
During my first semester at the Peabody Conservatory, while working on my master’s degree in composition, I participated in the annual 24 Hour Concert. At 8:00 p.m. on a Friday night, participating composers draw the names of performers out of a hat and have twelve hours to compose a new work for that ensemble. At 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the completed scores are handed to the performers, who then have twelve hours to rehearse. The concert takes place that evening at 8:00 p.m.—exactly twenty-four hours after the process began. I was thrilled to draw an ensemble of soprano, cello, and piano, and I stayed up through the night writing Under the Harvest Moon, setting a poem by one of my very favorite poets, Carl Sandburg. The immediacy of the process encouraged an instinctive, direct musical language—one that mirrors the poem’s quiet intimacy and nocturnal stillness. |
